Grace Episcopal Church is a spiritual Jesus Christ centered home and welcoming community to people of all ages, races and sexual orientations with different social, ethnic, cultural, family and religious backgrounds. Some are lifelong Episcopalians; some were raised in other Protestant denominations or in the Roman Catholic Church; some are new to the Christian faith; some are not quite sure what they believe. Our historic landmark building provides a setting for worship and prayer rich in tradition.
We are located two blocks south of Broadway on 36th Street, between Ave K and Ave L, our beautiful gothic style church is easily accessible. Designed by the famous architect Nicholas Clayton, the building was consecrated in 1895. A survivor of the 1900 Storm and more recently Hurricane Ike (2008). Grace continues to stand strong in our community and serves as a spiritual home for a diverse congregation. There is a place here for you!

Volunteer opportunities
We frequently work with mission groups coming to the Island who are looking for a place to stay while partnering with Island agencies. We also are home to the Silk Purse Thrift Store and have regular volunteer opportunities for those who are interested from inside and outside of the congregation.

SILK PURSE THRIFT STORE

The Silk Purse is the oldest thrift shop on Galveston Island. Located behind the main church at 1124 37th Street, the old house is a 1900 storm survivor. Established in 1959 by the Women of Grace Episcopal Church, this wonderful community outreach continues to celebrate with our neighbors.
Reopened after repairs from Hurricane Ike, the Silk Purse was the last building on our campus to be restored! The building was flooded with 9 inches of Ike water and had to be gutted. Once the wall covering materials were removed structural problems due to termites and rot were exposed and had to be repaired. The Silk Purse is better than before because the floor is level throughout and the lighting is much better.
Long a Galveston landmark for smart shoppers, this boutique-style emporium is recognized far and wide for its high quality, gently used merchandise that includes small furnishings, household and kitchen equipment, linens, sporting goods, toys, collectibles, books, costumes, decorative items, and clothing for men, women and children of all sizes, from newborn to extra-large.
