Brazosport Medical Center
Who is served by the Center?
Anyone is able to use the primary care, dental and eye care services. WIC and YFCS have their own criteria for eligibility. More than 90% of those receiving primary medical care are on medicaid, CHIP or other entitlement programs.
Persons claiming inability to pay are screened and must provide appropriate evidence of need. The number of patient encounters per year has been steadily increasing. The first year of stable operations saw some 13,000 PEs. Last year's reporting for United Way included some 20,000 PEs. This year we had some 18,500 PEs for the first three quarters of the UW reporting year. Some 82% of our medical patients are on Medicaid.
The Need for the Center
At the time the Center opened in March, 1999, the population of the 77541 zip code area was some 18,000. In that area there were no practicing MDs, one dentist, one chiropractor and one pharmacy. On the average, there is one medical doctor for every 450 residents of the United States. The 77541 zip code area contains a significant number of economically and educationally disadvantaged persons, many of whom have no access even to primary health care. Our surveys show that some 80% of our patients would not have access to health care without the Center.
The Center was established through a grant from Episcopal Health Charities. It has also received funds from Brazoria County, United Way (of which it is an agency), various churches, the Wright Family Foundation, and private donations.
