St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church

We are currently navigating worship and ministry in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our worship services, study groups, and intercessory prayer group are offered either via Facebook or Zoom. If you want to have a conversation with our priest, the Rev. Dr. Jeanine Driscoll, please email her at rector@canterburyabq.org
We come together through inclusive worship that uses the healing, transforming power of story, music and images to create and sustain our common life.
We actively partner with other churches and organization in ministering to the needs of students, faculty and staff at UNM as well as addressing social justice issues in our community.
We engage in lifelong learning about our faith and share what we have learned through an intentional program of study and mentoring based on individual needs.
Worship times
Challenging preaching and excellent music are integral to our worship. Music for our liturgies is drawn from the Hymnal 1982, 'Lift Every Voice and Sing', and 'Wonder, Love, and Praise'. We have a rare pipe organ built by the Odell Co. in 1868, a superb Chickering Grand Piano (ca. 1895). Chamber music is frequently performed in our Sunday liturgy, and especially so at our monthly Evening Prayer + Music services on Sunday afternoons.

Ministries
Young Adult Ministry
We strive to reach out to young adults at the University of NM and in the surrounding neighborhoods. Currently, we offer a Tuesday evening scripture study and discussion group. We read the gospel passage for the upcoming Sunday service and discuss our reactions and curiosities. We explore how the gospel reading resonates in our personal lives and how it speaks to the current events of our city, state, nation, and world. Currently, this group meets via Zoom. To participate, send an email to rector@canterburyabq.org.
Gospel Lessons for Gospel Living
Gospel Lessons for Gospel Living is a group for reflecting on and discussing the upcoming Sunday's gospel passage. We meditatively read the passage. We explore the context in which a particular gospel was written and we look at current events through the gospel teachings of Jesus. The main purpose of this group is to build our relationship with Jesus through spending time with the Jesus of the Gospels and with one another. We are currently meeting on Zoom. To participate, send an email to rector@canterburyabq.org.
Evening Prayer + Music
Evening Prayer + Music is an experience of the evening office which orchestrates liturgy, readings, chamber music, candles, and prayer. A bit different from the classic Evensong as sung by a cathedral choir, our expression offers ancient and modern chamber music, hymns and settings of the canticles sung by the congregation, and all within the embrace of Canterbury’s exquisite sanctuary.
Intercessory Prayer Group
The Intercessory Prayer Group meets on Thursday evenings. The group follows a beautifully simple outline which includes time for spoken and silent prayer. Typically the group meets for 45 minutes.
To participate, send an email to Anne at aomcc.abq@gmail.com
