St. Peter's Episcopal Church

Welcome to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. A theologically progressive Christian church, St. Peter’s is a safe place to explore or deepen your faith, a joyful place to worship, and a lively place to connect with others. We believe that God created all there is and declared it to be good. We believe that all people are beloved by God and are of equal worth and dignity.

Together, we raise our voices for justice, serve our neighbors and our city, and care for our planet and all of God’s creation. We invite you to participate in our life of prayer, learning, and service.

Ministries

St. Peter’s Food Cupboard

Food Pantries

The St. Peter’s Food Cupboard distributes groceries every Saturday morning from the St. Peter’s Parish House at 313 Pine Street. All are welcome if they need food. We believe that no one should go hungry, and we make food available at no cost.

Connecting Our Faith

Faith Formation

St. Peter’s invites you to engage more deeply with your faith and community through a diverse array of educational programs, held usually at 10 AM Sunday mornings. Guided conversations, Bible studies, and presentations given by experts in their fields provide opportunities for learning, growth, and spiritual exploration.

Family Worship

Children and Youth Ministries

Although St. Peter’s welcomes children at all times, a special service for young children and their families takes place at 9 a.m. every Sunday during the school year. This service nurtures children’s spiritual formation and growth through singing, stories, crafts, and communion. It is a playful, energetic service, led each week by a member of the clergy and our Children’s Ministry Leader on guitar. This is a long-standing service at St. Peter’s, often attracting 30-40 attendees each week. The Family Worship service is held at 9 a.m. in the Parish House at 313 Pine Street.

Sunday School

Children and Youth Ministries

Sunday School for children ages 6-10 years old is held during our regular 11AM worship service in the church during the school year (it is not held during the summer months). Everyone begins worship together in the sanctuary. Before the first reading, children and teachers are dismissed to Sunday School. They return during the Peace so your family can participate in Holy Eucharist and receive communion together.

Social Justice Discernment Group

Advocacy

The Social Justice Discernment Group comes together to discern how to keep the drumbeat of justice going in the St. Peter’s community, including by sharing resources and events with the parish on an ongoing basis. The group focuses on four main justice issues: Immigration, LGBTQIA+ rights, Healthcare (focus on women's reproductive rights), and Food Sovereignty.

Churchyard Gardeners

Creation Care/Community Gardens

Volunteers are needed to help prune seasonal plants, remove ivy, plant annuals, rake leaves, and general upkeep of the garden and grounds. The churchyard which surrounds St. Peter’s Church at 3rd and Pine Streets is a green oasis in the Society Hill neighborhood and is enjoyed by the entire community for its beautiful scenery and its history. No experience is necessary—our gardening group is a welcoming bunch! The group meets from March through November, generally once a month on Saturday mornings.

Sacred Ground

St. Peter’s engages in a program called Sacred Ground, a film- and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. Small groups walk through chapters of America’s history of race and racism, while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity. Sacred Ground is open to all, and especially designed to help white people talk with other white people. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.

Book Group

Arts & Culture

St. Peter’s Book Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month in a member’s home to discuss a book, movie or occasionally a play.
