Christ Episcopal Church

Share a story

One of the oldest Episcopal churches west of the Mississippi River, Christ Episcopal Church is located on Bayou Lafourche in the Napoleonville Parish. Built in 1853, Christ Episcopal served as a worship space for English-speaking Protestants in a predominately French-speaking Roman Catholic community, as well as a community center for all English-speaking area residents.  The church was designed in the Gothic Revival style by Frank Wills of the New York Ecclesiology Society .  Reminiscent of an English country church, the interior boasts beautiful stained glass windows as well as an 1880 George Jardine and Son, 1880 pipe organ.  The organ was purchased from Trinity Episcopal Church of New Orleans in 1889 and is still used today for services.  The small, 100 seat church has been the design inspiration for the famed Louisiana architect, A. Hays Town in his design of the Lewis Memorial Chapel at the Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Lafayette.

An annual service is held on the first Saturday of November (November 2 in 2019).  The Holy Eucharist is celebrated at 11 am and is followed by a meeting and luncheon.  The service and luncheon are opened to all and provide an opportunity for celebration and fellowship this wonderful historic setting.  For more information, please contact John Lafargue at 504.231.9052.
