St. Mary Magdalene is a Bi-Ritual Community celebrating the Eastern Rite of Divine Liturgy on the 1st and 3rd Sundays and the Episcopal Western Rite Liturgy (In accordance with the BCP) on the 2nd and 4th Sundays
Our Sunday Eucharistic celebrations include a dialogical homily involving priest and congregation.
The commitment to alternate the Western and Eastern liturgical rituals does not originate from style preferences, but from deep conviction and lived experience. It is also inspired by the Apostolic letter Orientale Lumen (Light of the East) written in 1995 by Pope John Paul II appealing to all Christians to affirm and embrace “the ancient tradition of the Eastern Churches an integral part of the heritage of Christ’s Church.”
This appeal calls on the Churches of the East and the West to concentrate on the essential: "We cannot come before Christ, the Lord of history, as divided as we have unfortunately been in the course of the second millennium. These divisions must give way to rapprochement and harmony; the wounds on the path of Christian unity must be healed.”(9)
The Church to be lived in all its fullness, she needs to recapture what it means to “breathe with two lungs.”
