Church of the Resurrection

We are a community of Christians on a faith journey together. As part of that journey we worship, study, enjoy each others’ company, and help others. We would welcome your energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm. Bring them all and find what God is calling you to do in the West End of Alexandria. We worship in-person in small groups on Sunday mornings at 8, 9, and 10:30 am. Our 8 am Eucharist services are shared on Zoom for all who would attend. We also offer an Adult Forum in person at 11:30 am and Sunday School and Godly Play in person during the 9:00 am service.

We worship in a new building consecrated on Holy Saturday (April 2) 2021. We built it as part of an eight-year project to build 113 units of affordable housing on the property.

We have a glorious choir and there is much singing and participation in the service. We use the Book of Common Prayer or Enriching Our Worship.

A core Resurrection commitment is outreach to help others. On Monday evenings (5:00 - 6:30) we offer a food pantry for Alexandria residents; the pantry is now housed at 5150 Fillmore Avenue. We have numerous drives and other donation efforts throughout the year to help those in need in the community around it—the poorest area of our City.

We also participate in VOICE, a nonpartisan coalition of some 50 faith communities and groups that are working together in northern Virginia to bring justice into the public arena. We have participated in events to hold banks accountable for questionable lending practices and to press for creation of affordable housing as a public policy. We hope to assist in organizing Alexandria faith communities to support its local issues.

Resurrection has always been on the cutting edge of social justice. We assisted in establishing community resources to help low income people with housing and rehabilitation such as Carpenter’s Shelter and Community Lodgings. We welcomed women as ordained priests long before the Episcopal church did as a whole. We are in a Diocese and are in a congregation that blesses gay and lesbian unions.

We warmly invite you to join us.

Sacred Ground Race Dialogue Circles

Racial Reconciliation

Sacred Ground is dialogue series on race, grounded in faith.  Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race, racism, and whiteness while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity. The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.

Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.  This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups.  Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.

Stories of the Diocese: Church of the Resurrection, Alexandria

In response to the loss of over 90% of affordable housing units in Alexandria, members of the Church of the Resurrection took an extraordinary leap of faith in 2019: to tear down their church building and use their land to build a 113-unit apartment complex for working families.
