Church of the Good Shepherd

Share a story

Greetings!  No matter who you are or where you are in spiritual journey, there is a place for you here at Good Shepherd.

We're so glad that you have found us and that you want to know a little more about us.  In the pages of this website we hope that you'll come to find a church where you can feel the warmth of a welcome from one and all, support for your worship life, and most importantly that you can become a part of all we do.

We are part of The Episcopal Church and a member congregation of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina under the episcopate of The Rt. Rev. W. Andrew Waldo, 8th Bishop of our Diocese.

We aspire to be a faith community in which everyone can explore and expand their relationship with the triune God -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  There is joy in our personal faith journeys as well as sorrow and we are here to exult with you in the joys of life and comfort you through the changes and challenges of life.  We gather to encourage each other as we learn more about ourselves as children of God and how we can act more intentionally as Christ's body in the world.

MINISTRY WITHIN THE LITURGY
Worship is central to the life of the church.  Liturgy, which shapes our worship, is by definition, “the work of the people.”

ACOLYTES
Acolytes assist the Celebrant during worship, serving as Crucifer, Torch Bearer, Banner Bearer, Book Bearer, 1st Server, and Thurifer.

ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild has the privilege of preparing the altar for any service held in the church, and assisting the clergy when necessary.  They are also responsible for cleaning the altar, caring for the sacred vessels, flowers, and securing the necessary articles to be used at any service.

CHOIR
The Choir sings for the main Sunday service and for Holy Days and special occasions.  Those in the Choir offer their time and talent to support and enrich our liturgical life.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER
Formerly known as a Chalice Bearer or LEM, the EM administers the cup during Holy Communion and assists the Celebrant as needed. This ministry requires formal training and a license from the Bishop.

EUCHARISTIC VISITOR
An EV is one who takes communion to the sick and homebound on behalf of the congregation. This ministry requires formal training and a license from the Bishop.

LECTOR
A Lector reads the assigned Scripture and the Prayers of the People at worship services.  Lectors are chosen and trained by the minister of the congregation.

USHER
Ushers hand out service bulletins, assist visitors, collect the offering of the people, prepare the altar rail, coordinate the distribution of communion and straighten the Nave after the service

WORSHIP LEADER
A Worship Leader can lead services other than Eucharist such as Morning or Evening Prayer.  This ministry requires formal training and a license from the Bishop.

MINISTRY WITHIN THE PARISH COMMUNITY
These ministries contribute to the health and well-being of the parish on Sunday and throughout the week.

COFFEE HOUR DONUT HOST
We get donuts from a local bakery to provide a light bite for the congregation and visitors after the Sunday worship service while we join together in getting to know one another better.

COMMITTEES AND GROUPS
Committees assist the Clergy and Vestry in governance, oversight and upkeep of the Parish.

Building and Grounds Committee
Sees that the buildings are kept in proper repair, and memorials, fittings and furnishings are in harmony with the parish.

Finance Committee
Oversees the finances of the parish and supervises the office of Treasurer.  Members are chosen by existing members when a vacancy occurs.  Anyone expressing an interest will be considered.

Greeters
Greeters welcome members and newcomers on Sunday mornings to make sure they are invited to Coffee Hour after the service and to assist them if they need information about our parish.

Parish Life Committee
This group strengthens the bonds of those within our parish; plans meals, fellowship opportunities, and other events to promote a sense of community with our parish.

Pastoral Care and Pastoral Visitors
This ministry is implemented by the Priest and is involved in calling on members who are ill or homebound.

Stewardship Committee
Educates parishioners on Stewardship, advises parishioners quarterly of their pledge giving status, and encourages the giving of time and talent to the Church.

MINISTRY WITHIN THE LARGER COMMUNITY
There are many opportunities to serve the larger community and Good Shepherd's members have traditionally been associated with:

Clover Area Assistance Center
A nonprofit, collaborative agency established to respond effectively and compassionately to need individuals (Clover School District). CAAC provides food assistance and some limited financial assistance to those in need.  www.cloverareaassistance.org

P.A.T.H., Inc.
PATH has a food pantry, thrift store, and emergency financial aid for utilities and other needs and is the frontline of community-based assistance for those in crisis locally (in York School District 1).  www.pathministriesofyorksc.org
