St. Luke the Evangelist is the first Black Episcopal Church in Houston, founded in 1920. Today, we are proud to be a congregation where everyone is welcome; one church, diverse in culture, race, ethnicity and age but one in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. St. Luke is located in Houston’s Third Ward and is located across the street from the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall College of Law and a few blocks from the University of Houston.
We are an inclusive community serving all of God’s children by spreading the word of GOD through JESUS CHRIST, opening the door of fellowship, celebrating CHRIST through worship, education and music and developing ministries to strengthen of parish community in outreach and minister to students at Texas Southern University. Our future includes expanding the ministry to students, faculty, and staff at Texas Southern University and expanding our partnership with the new College Missioner at the University of Houston.
Our outreach also includes providing free space and hosting the Community Music Center of Houston’s Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra, the Children’s Summer String Camp and their summer and winter recitals. In partnership with Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, we support Blessings in a Backpack, providing food for the weekends to the students at Blackshear Elementary School. We also collect food and donate funds to Manna House Food Pantry who serves those in need of food in our immediate community.
Each year, we hold an annual Fall Festival, in conjunction with the celebration of St. Luke Day to raise funds to support our activities.
St. Luke conforms to the beliefs and values of the Episcopal Church. We are a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, The Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States and of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
