St. James' Episcopal Church
Share a story
Our church is mostly African American with many parishioners from the Caribbean. Originally a White church that has been through changes as social and polictical changes have occurred since the 1940's. The community around us is poor and just southeast of the downtown area. We are also east of the large medical center Houston is famous for. We are close to Texas Southern University and University of Houston and a public elementary school. For over 20 years, we have provided a Sunday afternoon worship service, and seated hot meal for the hungry. For most or those same years we had a very successful elementary school which grew to include a Middle School. Due to changing demographics and increased number of schools, we came to the decision to close our school two years ago. We support a food pantry with a group of churches of different denominations.
