St. Anselm's Episcopal Church

Share a story

We are a predominantly African American congregation that worships with an Anglo Catholic style.   Mainly our organist plays hymns from the Lift Every Voice And Sing II Hymnal and the 1982 Hymnal.

St. Anselm's began as a Student Chapel for the local historic black colleges and universities in Nashville.  We were an outreach of Holy Trinity Church on Lafayette Street in the late 1950s.  In 1960 St. Anselm's was consecrated a chapel on property donated by prominent Civil Rights Attorney Z. Alexander Looby who lived next door.  Chaplains held worship for students at Fisk University, Meharry Medical College and Tennessee Agriculture and Industrial State University (now TSU).  In 1983 St. Anselm's became a Mission Church of the Diocese of Tennessee.
