Las Americas is a 29 year-old, homegrown, non-profit dedicated to serving the legal needs of low income immigrants, including refugees, victims of crime, and families seeking reunification. Las Americas lawyers and staff are committed to providing legal representation to those who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Las Americas believes that the American Dream should not be for sale but should be accessible to all deserving people, regardless of their countries of origin and their financial standing. Since 1987, Las Americas, which is certified by the Board of Immigration Appeals, has provided representation to more than 12,000 low-income immigrants in El Paso. Las Americas’ clients are from all over the world. The El Paso port-of-entry sees the second highest number of people crossing into the United States by land, second only to San Diego. El Paso is also an high-traffic corridor for illegal crossings. Immigrants from all around the world end up in El Paso through smuggling and migration and Las Americas’ staff have helped clients from countries as far as Burma and Cameroon. Las Americas strives to be an efficient organization, relying on volunteer attorneys and interns for many of its cases. We utilize all in-kind and monetary donations to provide better services to our clients, and we constantly strive to be on the frontlines of advocating for immigrant rights.
“In my years as a member of Las Americas, I have had many privileged encounters, listening to each person’s story, every one of them unique… I have come to realize that all of us can become a vital source of self-respect, hope, and encouragement.” — Sister Phyllis Nolan, longtime Las Americas volunteer

LEGAL PROGRAM: ASYLUM
Since 2000, Las Americas has assisted asylum seekers from over 25 countries, including Algeria, Dominican Republic, Bosnia, El Salvador, India, Burundi, Georgia, Mexico, and Colombia. Wars and repressive governments continue to create a flood of refugees to our shores
LEGAL PROGRAM: WOMEN
Immigrant women who marry U.S. citizens or legal residents are eligible to apply for legal immigration status. Unfortunately, some women find themselves trapped by abusive husbands who may refuse to help them and even hold their lack of immigration documents as a threat –‘if you dare complain about the abuse, I’ll call immigration on you.’ Women stuck in such abusive relationships are often isolated and indigent and live in fear of being deported and separated from their children. It takes tremendous courage on their part to contact Las Americas and seek a better future for themselves and their children.
Las Americas has currently about 70 open cases involving abused women. Through the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA, we can request legal permanent residency status and even suspend deportation proceedings for battered spouses and children, without the help or knowledge of the abuser.
LEGAL PROGRAM: FAMILIES
Las Americas offers a wide range of family-based immigration services for nominal fees.
