Christ Church, New Brighton, Staten Island

Our community garden is in six raised beds on the church lawn.

We have an partnership with the Episcopal High Schools Alumni Association in Liberia.  We have hosted alumni association meetings, fundraisers, collected books and school supplies. We have also installed solar lighting in the areas of the schools. We visited the schools in 2024, bringing computers, supplies and fundraising to support the hardworking teachers.

We provide holiday food bags three times a year, 250 per holiday, at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The holiday bags generally include a frozen chicken, fresh fruits and vegetables, potatoes, cranberry or apple sauce, pasta, sauce, rice and beans, canned fruit and vegetables, breakfast cereal, and shelf-stable milk. Each package contains enough to feed a family of four to six for a day. 

We also keep a cabinet of shelf-stable food that we distribute to families as needed throughout the year. 

The holiday food ministry is part of our larger work plan on food insecurity on Staten Island. We continue to volunteer on a monthly basis at a Saturday Feeding Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church, where we help prepare and/or serve 75 - 150 meals in a sitting.

We also pay for SNAP memberships in the Staten Island Community Supported Agriculture group during the 24-week season. Leftover organic vegetables from the SICSA are distributed on Friday or Saturday to families in need, and then to Christ Church parishioners after Sunday services.

"The Christ Church Community Youth Choir meets weekly, giving children the opportunity to learn to read music, rhythms, and vocal production.

The Christ Church Community Music & Movement group meets weekly for an hour to incorporate movement with percussion and stringed instruments.

Both groups have multiple opportunities to perform in public."

Hours of operation:

Christ Church Community Youth Choir: Monday 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. 

Christ Church Community Music & Movement group: Saturday 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Both groups are open to children aged 7 and older.

The knitting group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the Vestry room.

All are welcome to the monthly Gratitude Breakfasts on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of the month, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Christ Church offers weekly Sunday School classes from September through June.

Godly Play for K-5th grade, Rite 13 for 6th - 8th grade, J2A for 9th-10th grade, and 4WARD for 11th - 12th grade.

Youth participate in an islandwide Youth Group with their peers in our sister Episcopal Churches.

Adult Bible Study meets on zoom weekly on Sundays at 2 p.m.

There is a Prayer Group and Book Club that meets on zoom on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Christ Church holds a monthly service with prayers and hymns at The Veranda, an assisted-living residential program.
