St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church
Share a story
St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church is located at 331 Hawthorne Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11225, adjacent to the nationally renowned Kings County Municipal Hospital in the heart of East Flatbush.
The Church was built at the turn of the century in the year 1905 by the gentry of the day, for the children of slaves. Although the building was intended to contain two floors, only the basement level was completed, and that space had been the place of worship for the 105 years of the church’s existence. The walls of that building were made partially of concrete blocks and wood. The roof was covered with asphalt shingles.
Recognizing its religious as well as civic responsibilities in the community, a new building was erected in 1991 to meet the growing needs of this Christian Church. The new building was designed to provide space for both liturgical and community activities. St. Gabriel’s works closely with the community boards and community organizations to develop needed community programs for senior citizens and young people alike. The new facility certainly has a stabilizing effect upon the community.
