St. Elisabeth's Episcopal Church

Share a story

We at St. Elisabeth’s share an adventurous spirit and a commitment to radiate God’s love within and beyond our red doors.

We worship in the Episcopal tradition. The Table set in our midst is God’s Table and has no specific denominational or religious label.  As God’s children all are welcome to receive communion there. We are an inclusive congregation in the Village of Glencoe in the North Shore of Chicago, we are an Episcopal Church, part of the Diocese of Chicago, the Episcopal Church in the United States—one of many churches that make up the world-wide Anglican Communion.

What is worship at St. Elisabeth’s like?

Worship at St. Elisabeth’s has been described as both traditional and contemporary; fresh, engaging, yet timeless; dignified but not stuffy. We have Worship Planning meetings, open to all members of the congregation, throughout the year to give voice and shape to our liturgy. For more information about our Sunday Services, please see details below.

An overview of our Sunday services

On Sunday mornings, there are two services of the Holy Eucharist at 8 & 10 AM. Both services have readings from the Bible and a Sermon.

At the 8 AM service, “traditional” language is used, called Rite I in the Episcopal Church. This utilizes the beauty and poetic nature of Elizabethan English that many find inspiring. A more intimate, smaller gathering, the 8 AM service is quiet in nature and has a more contemplative feel to it.

The 10 AM service is the larger of the two services, celebratory, and uses contemporary language – nothing unfamiliar to a person off the street. In the Episcopal Church, this is known as Rite II. The 10 AM service also has hymns sung by the whole congregation, the choir & other guest musicians enriching the service, and the glorious sound of the organ.

St. Elisabeth’s Solar Panels

Creation Care/Community Gardens

In April of 2012, St. Elisabeth’s won a grant from the State of Illinois to go towards the installation of solar panels. After much dedication and generosity of members and friends of St. Elisabeth’s to see this project through, 30 solar panels were installed on the roof over the Parish Hall in June of 2012. The panels produce electricity for the church and when it is not needed for our use, the electricity generated goes directly into the local power grid.

Family Promise

Shelter and Housing

Our congregation is excited to be part of bringing the nationally acclaimed Family Promise program to the Chicago area. The concept of being able to host fellow North Shore families who find themselves in emergency homeless situations for a week while they make new housing arrangements has attracted our people because it gives us a chance to practice the heart of what our Christian faith is about: loving our neighbors in the name of God. Because of code restrictions we are not able to host families overnight in our facility. We are partnering with other congregations so that we can move forward with this mission. Our first two hosts weeks in 2012 with Am Shalom Congregation in Glencoe, and St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilmette. They were a great success due to our many volunteers.
