Bread and Roses seeks justice for people and ecosystems with actions that center food and community. The program began in 2014 when members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Charlottesville committed themselves to addressing some of the systematic injustices of food and nutrition. Charlottesville has a vibrant local food culture, and abundant natural resources, so we need to make sure that we invite everyone to the table. After a year of determined fundraising and renovations on our building and grounds, we have two beautiful, productive vegetable gardens, extensive native plant gardens, and a commercial kitchen that can be rented by under resourced and beginning food entrepreneurs to build successful small businesses. Our gardens are managed by following the eight principles of conservation landscaping as outlined by the Chesapeake Bay Landscaping Council. We compost garden waste, use rain barrels to capture water, grow our vegetables and manage our native gardens without pesticides, remove invasive species, create wildlife habitat, and build community through partnerships with individuals and non profit partners throughout aCharlottesville. We also offer programs that inspire and instruct people to create food that is affordable and nourishing by partnering with other local groups. Please contact us if you would like to know more.
