Welcome to St John's Episcopal Church!

St. John’s Episcopal Church is a small but vibrant spiritual Community with roots formed more than a century ago in 1881. The first two years services were held in private homes and in shared space provided by other local churches. Beginning in 1883 the we've come together in worship here on South Main Street in a beautiful old wooden church personally constructed by our first rector with the help of a few parishioners.  We are the only Episcopal church in McDowell County, NC. As a fully inclusive community seeking to follow Christ's Way of Love we invite you to join us in worship and mission, and make St. John’s your spiritual home.

You are invited to look through our website to find out more about our vibrant and ongoing ministries including the Martha T. Simmons Food Pantry, which serves over 120 local families every week, our St. John's Community Garden which provides fresh produce to the food pantry, and the Pet Food Bank that helps feed over 100 animals twice monthly.

To find out more about our faith, and what our church is all about, and we actively encourage you to contact us if we can answer any questions, or be of any help. Our mailing address is P.O. Box 968, Marion, NC 28752

St. John's, Martha Simmons Food Pantry

Food Pantries

We offer a Food Pantry every Friday from 4pm-6pm

The Martha T. Simmons Food Pantry began about 45 years ago through the efforts of a parishioner named Martha Simmons.  She was aware of food insecurity in the Marion community so she brought nonperishable items to the Parish House and stored them in a closet. During the COVID19 uncertainties our food pantry volunteers continued to serve the community by changing the in-pantry self service, to a drive up and take out model which we have continued because it allows us to serve more families each time. With the old model in our limited space we were only able to serve about 50 families, today we serve between 120 and 150 families each week.

St. John's Community Garden

Creation Care/Community Gardens

In the spring of 2014, St. John’s Community Garden (SJCG) was established to grow fresh produce for our Food Pantry.  Since the beginning, several local farms, greenhouses, and community members, have donated plants and garden materials in support of the SJCG. A bio-intensive organic gardening technique has produced hundreds of pounds of vegetables for our food pantry each year in a 45 ft. by 90 ft. area.
