Trinity Episcopal Church is the oldest church building in Coles County. The building was originally built by the Unitarian Church. The building then served as Mattoon’s temporary high school. After the high school was built across the street, the local Episcopalians bought the building. To commemorate the building’s ties to the high school, Trinity has maintained a green floor in acknowledgment of the school’s mascot, the “Green Wave”-think of wind blowing over fields of green grass.
Trinity Episcopal Church is an integral part of the community as the town’s 4th of July parade begins at its front door with the ringing of the church bells.
Trinity Episcopal Church strives to follow the Commandments of Jesus Christ: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind; and Love your neighbor as yourself. Our church outreach programs address the needs of the homeless and the marginalized. In addition, AA/NA meetings are held on Monday and Thursday nights at 7pm.
As a Christian community, we are made up of people from different walks of life and experiences. We choose to gather together at Trinity because we feel the deep roots of community and tradition here, yet our message and our outreach programs reflect the needs of today’s world.
Since most of us once belonged to a different denomination, we easily identify with a visitor who is unfamiliar with our service. We encourage everyone to simply relax, take in the serenity of our sacred space, and feel comfortable as we praise and worship the Lord. A nursery is available, but a crying baby doesn’t upset us either.
Something more about our faith, historically we walk the middle road between Catholicism and Protestantism. We are sacramental and believe in the apostolic succession (bishops, priests, and deacons), but we do not have a pope. Every baptized person is allowed to partake in communion including baptized infants and people who have remarried.
