"Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."
                                                                                     Colossians 3:14

With these words, the Apostle Paul commends the Christians in Colossae to embrace a new life in Christ in which they seek to bear one another's burdens and share one another's joys. It is this new life that we seek to embody at St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. We invite you to be part of this remarkable community...and clothe yourself with love in this place, through worship, study, fellowship and outreach. Please come!

Worship times

Sunday
8:00 am
English
Holy Eucharist, Rite I
A quiet way to start your Sunday, the 8:00 service lasts forty-five minutes and includes scripture readings, a sermon, prayers, and communion. There is no music at this service, and the prayers use traditional language that hearkens back to the sixteenth century, when the first Book of Common Prayer was written.
Sunday
10:00 am
English
Holy Eucharist, Rite II
The 10:00 service includes scripture readings, a sermon, prayers, and communion in modern language. Our choir enhances this worship experience by leading us in the singing of traditional hymns and anthems, accompanied by our newly-renovated Aeolian-Skinner/Quimby pipe organ. The 10:00 service lasts an hour and ten minutes.
Sunday
5:00 pm

The Gathering Eucharist
The Gathering experience begins with worship at 5:00 p.m. Using Anglican worship resources from Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand, this acoustic communion service has an entirely different feel from our morning worship services. The Gathering Band (which includes acoustic guitar, flute, violin, cello, mandolin, and sometimes even melodica!) leads us in singing traditional and new arrangements of hymns from The 1982 Hymnal and also modern Christian music that reflects the Gathering’s ancient-modern style of worship.

The Community Garden

Creation Care/Community Gardens

The garden offers a way for parishioners of all ages to reconnect with God the Creator and one another. Gardening reminds us, too, that any kind of growth takes time, care, and community.

Sacred Ground

St. John's offers Sacred Ground circles each year starting in January. Join us for this important discussion of race and faith.

Red Cross Blood Drives

Aging, Health and Wellbeing

Local hospitals rely on the American Red Cross to supply them with blood and St. John’s hosts five blood drives each year. Give the gift of life by donating blood and give the gift of hospitality by helping during a drive.

St. John's Literacy Ministry

Career Services and Education

St. John’s partners with Blue Ridge Literacy to tutor adult English language learners and refugees or immigrants in reading, writing, and conversation. Each tutor is trained by BRL and assigned a student who they commit to tutor for 1-2 hours a week for at least six months. Tutors meet monthly together for support.

St. John's Becoming Beloved Community Guiding Team

Racial Reconciliation

Our Baptismal Covenant calls us to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace among all people, while respecting the dignity of every human being. And yet, we live in a society that struggles with this. Join us as we consider what it takes to be beloved community in our congregation, in our city, and beyond.

Fine Wines
