All Saints Church

Share a story

All Saints’ began as a mission in 1896 and became a parish in 1906.  Since 1899 it has occupied the southeast corner of Sixth and Pennsylvania in the Hillcrest district of San Diego.  The current church, the first large building in the neighborhood, was erected by distinguished architects in 1912.  It is probably the oldest continuously operating church in the city of San Diego.  Its 32 stained glass windows, created by the Justin Studios of Los Angeles, and installed between 1957 and 1967, form a unified collection remarkable for its artistic value.  The church has been carefully maintained so as to reflect its historic character.  The great majority of its furnishings are original.

Other buildings in the central plant include a chapel, office structures, and parish hall, erected between 1924 and 1950, also by distinguished architects.  Nearby church properties include a school building, erected in 1959, and other structures, now housing a pre-school and several community service organizations.

The parish is Rite I and Anglo-Catholic.  It delights in traditional but lively worship and is proud of its fine music program.  All Saints’ has never been a wealthy parish; it succeeds by hard work and God’s providence.  Its congregation is highly diverse in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and social class.

Blessing Bag Ministry

We organize four blessing bag events each year.  Non-perishable snacks, water, and seasonally appropriate travel-sized hygiene items are collected from parishioners either in the form of actual items or cash donations.  Our goal is to send out 100 bags each time - they are taken by our parishioners to be delivered personally to the homeless people in our communty.  The response from our parishioners and the various recipients has been wonderful . . .

Alcoholics Anonymous
