MYSTERY The Eucharist, our great thanksgiving for everything God has done for us, is a beautiful mystery, where we receive Jesus Christ in bread and wine, through faith. The Holy Spirit moves among us when we worship together, and the mystery of that experience transforms us. JOY There’s a deep gladness in our community for what God has done for us, and we express that in our worship. We love getting together for worship, and that joy in community is both obvious and contagious. SILENCE We leave room for silence in our liturgy, because in the silences, we are better able to listen. SINGING We love to sing, and we do all of our singing a cappella, (without accompaniment). It helps us to listen to each other, and to enjoy the sound of our voices together. It’s not usually traditional hymns; most of our songs were written to be sung a cappella, and are both beautiful and easily sing-able. LOVE Above all, we believe in God’s love for everyone. Period. And we aim to share that love, with everyone. Period.

Meal Programs

“I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” –Matthew 25:36

For over 27 years, St. Luke’s has been welcoming and serving anyone who needs a meal in our church basement. Each weekday morning, a ministry team opens our doors, prepares coffee and food (all of which has been donated), and offers a meal, a cup of coffee, and a warm place to enjoy them to everyone who shows up. We ask our guests to be respectful, but not religious. We pray for them regularly. We pray with them when they ask. We listen to and care for them, and some of them choose to be a part of our congregation. We welcome them in our midst as well.

Even when our congregation was too small to have our own priest, even part-time, we lived into our Christian commitment to feed the poor and comfort the afflicted. On average, we serve over 100 breakfast meals each day Monday through Friday. That’s about 2,000 meals a month. We invite you to join us in this joyful ministry with either your help in the kitchen or a donation.

St Luke's Urban Garden

Creation Care/Community Gardens

SLUG (St. Luke’s Urban Garden) is the name of the lot now hosting P-patch plots for local residents. SLUG began as a vacant lot, filled with weeds and junk. With the aid of a benevolent bulldozer and many helping hands, it became a community garden, filled with people, vegetables, and flowers. SLUG reminds us of how we, too, can be transformed with the help of God’s love in community.

We know many people in the neighborhood would love to garden, but either don’t know how, or don’t have the space to do so where they live. We’re delighted to offer help to both of those groups through Second Saturday Gardening.

We work in the gardens on the second Saturday of the each month (except when it’s raining) and are more than happy to share our experience and love of God’s creation with anyone and everyone.

You don’t need to be a member of St. Luke’s, or a Christian at all, or even believe that there is a God in the first place. Everyone is welcome to come to garden.

Sacred Ground Race Dialogue Circles

Racial Reconciliation

Sacred Ground is dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race, racism, and whiteness while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity. The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.

Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.
