Christ Church

History: The first service was held in Oil City on June 8, 1862, when the region was the hub of the booming oil industry. The first rector was called in 1866. The first church building was completed in 1870 and the current building in 1887. The Parish Hall,  added in 1905 serves as a center for many community activities and was renamed Deacon Charl Kapp Hall in honor of the deacon’s service to our church and community. Tourism now plays a prominent role in the region. The city's Victorian architecture and the thriving arts community attract new residents to the area. In addition to more conventional ministries, Christ Church is an active supporter of the local business community and the arts community, believing that God calls us to do anything that improves the quality of life in our region.

RECOVERY MINISTRY

Aging, Health and Wellbeing
Faith Formation

Dealing with drug and alcohol issues has taken on more importance in the Episcopal Church in recent years, and there is also a new interest in the problem at the local level, with the county establishing a drug overdose task force.

The Rev. Mark Elliston leads this ministry at Christ Episcopal Church. His ministry is affiliated with the Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church.

Mark has conducted recovery spiritual services since 2015, both in the Church and at local recovery units. The church currently has 4 meetings a week run by 12-Step recovery groups in Deacon Kapp Hall.

SECOND HARVEST SENIOR FOOD BOX PROGRAM

Meal Programs

As part of its outreach mission, Christ Episcopal Church has sponsored the Second Harvest Food Box Program for low-income senior citizens (age 60 and older) since 2011.

Started by Jocelind Gant and the late Deacon Charl Kapp, church volunteers distribute food boxes to eligible seniors one Saturday each month. Serving approximately 2 dozen area residents. The box contains a balance of food items from the major food groups: canned vegetables and fruit, bottled or canned 100% juice, canned meat and non-meat protein, pasta or rice, cereal or oatmeal, evaporated or instant milk, and a two-pound block of cheese.

For Every Child a Good Night

Children and Youth Ministries

This program distributes approximately 700 pairs of pajamas matched with age-appropriate books to elementary students throughout the Oil City area every Christmas. The program receives wide community support and the church distributes the items through school and service agency partners.

ACTS

Children and Youth Ministries

This program, managed by our Worship Leader, Leann Felmlee-Brown, provides personal care items to adolescents in our area.
