Emmanuel Episcopal Church

The current church building on the corner of 4th and Walnut Streets was built in 1901. It was designed by Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson, the architectural firm who also designed the United States Military Academy at West Point and redesigned the Cathedral of St John the Divine in NYC. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it is constructed of brownstone with limestone trim and has a large square bell tower that currently houses the speakers for our carillon. The original church building was built in 1866 – the first church built in Emporium – and was moved to the back of the lot and reconfigured as our parish house (known as Miller Hall) when the current church was built. Handicapped access to the church is available via a ramp at the rear of the church building that leads into the sacristy. A handicapped ramp is also available for Miller Hall.

We are currently without a full-time priest.  We have one service on Sunday morning, at 11 AM. The service is may be Holy Eucharist (Rite Two) with a supply priest,  or Liturgy of the Word or  Morning Prayer (usually Rite One) led by one of our lay worship leaders. The choir rehearses in the church on Sunday morning at 10:15 AM. We have fellowship (also known as Coffee Hour) in Miller Hall after every Sunday’s service, and all are welcome both at the service and at the coffee hour. We tend to be informal in both dress and manner, and do our best to make visitors feel welcomed but not overwhelmed.

Children are always welcome at the worship service, and we understand that silence and stillness do not come naturally to them. Activity bags are available in the vestibule to help keep them occupied during the service should they need it. We encourage their participation in the service and enjoy the sound of young voices. There is a nursery / playroom available in the parish house, if the service is too overwhelming for them.
