St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

St. Stephen's, Lubbock, was started in 1958, when a recycled Army barracks was moved to the church's current location, which at the time was surrounded cotton fields, onion fields, and barns. Lubbock was growing, as was the need for a third Episcopal congregation in west Lubbock. St. Stephen's was the second parochial mission of St. Paul's on the Plains. The Rev. Allan P. Price was the first vicar. By March of 1960, St. Stephen's was recognized as a diocesan mission, and in 1962, ground was broken for a new building. The Spanish colonial style of architecture was designed by Whitaker and Hall, of Lubbock, and included thick walls and buttresses, high clerestory windows, and tile trim. The nave was designed in a cruciform style, which focused on a central altar. The new building was dedicated on May 12, 1963, by the Rt. Rev. George Quarterman, the first Bishop of Northwest Texas. In 1989, St. Stephen's received the organ from Holy Cross, Lubbock, when  that mission closed.

St. Stephen's has been led by numerous notable rectors including the Rev. Canon William Nix; the Rev. Clifton Mann and his wife, the Rev. Jo Roberts Mann, The Rev. Margaret Austin, the Rev. David Perdue, and our newest rector the Rev. Justin Gibson who comes to us from El Paso.
