We at Christ Church aim to be a Cathedral in the City. Our city is a town of 8,000 "overnight" population that also serves as the capital of Vermont, thus producing a "daytime" population of 25,000. Our 150 year old church building and 85 year old parish hall sit in the midst of downtown, the only church on the street that houses the state capitol, important government buildings, and local buinesses.
The congregation was formed as early as 1842 by individuals who became important leaders in state government and in the National Life Insurance Company. A fire in 1903 seriously damaged our sanctuary but repairs were made that lasted over 100 years. In 2015 in the midst of restoration work, a crane fell on the roofline causing serious damage again to the sanctuary. After six months of worshipping in our parish hall we have moved back into the sanctuary in time for the new church year, having made modest changes to promote accessibility, a more welcoming environment for families and children, and to enhance our music program. These changes were made within the context of maintaining the traditions of our space and demonstrating sound stewardship of our resources.
Over its history, Christ Church has been known as a center of outreach and a space for establishing community. Currently our physical space is used by our own ministries as well as many community partners.
