The Small Church
“In a big world, the small church has remained intimate. In a fast world, the small church has remained steady. In an expensive world, the small church has remained plain. In a complex world, the small church has remained simple. In a rational world, the small church has kept feeling. In a mobile world, the small church has been an anchor. In an anonymous world, the small church calls us by name.” —The Anglican Digest
St. Luke’s is a small, historic Episcopal church located just outside downtown Asheville in Chunns Cove. A congregation began meeting in Chunns Cove in 1858; the church itself was founded in 1898. The congregation includes people from all walks of life, of all ages and from all parts of Buncombe County. Our worship on Sunday mornings is traditional but open, reverent but relaxed. A few years ago the church wrote a mission statement to describe its particular calling: St. Luke’s is a welcoming, spiritual family who worships, loves, works and plays together in Christ, celebrating the old, embracing the new, honoring creation and serving the larger community.
