Church of the Good Shepherd

Share a story

The story of Good Shepherd began long before hashtags, livestreams, or even paved roads — back in 1901, with chapel services held beside Sheltering Arms Hospital overlooking the Kanawha River. From the very beginning, this church existed to serve its community in moments of hope, hardship, healing, and change.

What started as a small mission chapel quickly became a spiritual home for hospital workers, miners, families, travelers, and neighbors throughout the Upper Kanawha Valley. Through world wars, the Mine Wars, economic uncertainty, and even devastating landslides that forced the original church building to be abandoned, the people of Good Shepherd kept showing up, rebuilding, praying, and caring for one another.

In 1943, during the middle of World War II, construction began on the church building that still stands today in Hansford. Despite wartime shortages and delays, the congregation pressed forward in faith. When the doors finally opened in 1944, Good Shepherd became the only Episcopal church built in the Diocese of West Virginia during World War II — a reminder that even in difficult times, hope still builds something lasting.

Today, Good Shepherd continues that same spirit of welcome and resilience. We are a small Episcopal church with deep roots, open doors, and room for real people with real lives. Whether you are lifelong Episcopalian, spiritually curious, part of a growing family, returning to church after years away, or simply looking for peace in a noisy world, you are welcome here.

Our worship blends ancient tradition with a relaxed and approachable atmosphere. Kids are welcome. Questions are welcome. You are welcome.

Every Sunday at 10:30 AM, we gather for Holy Eucharist (Rite II) — sharing prayer, Scripture, music, and Communion together as a community still writing its story more than a century later.

Our worship is rooted in the ancient traditions of the Episcopal Church, but don’t let the word “traditional” scare you off. Expect meaningful prayers, Scripture, music, a thoughtful message, and Holy Communion shared together in a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

You’ll hear organ or piano music, sing hymns with the congregation, and join in shared prayers and responses — but no pressure to know everything. Seriously. Most people are flipping through the bulletin too.

Our Sunday service follows the rhythm of Holy Eucharist (Rite II): we gather, listen to Scripture, pray together, share Communion, and leave encouraged to carry God’s love into the world around us.

Some people come ready to sing every hymn. Others come needing a quiet moment to breathe. Both belong here.

Families and children are always welcome — every whisper, wiggle, and giggle included. And if your little one needs a quick reset, our Family Room just outside the worship space lets you stay connected to the service through a live video feed while caring for your child comfortably.

Come in through the red doors, sit wherever you’d like, and participate however feels comfortable to you. Whether you’ve been Episcopalian your whole life or you’re walking into church for the very first time, there’s space for you here.
