St. John's Episcopal Church

Share a story

St. John's Episcopal Church has been serving the Cache Valley in Utah since 1873. Cache Valley is a rural, agricultural area that straddles the Utah/Idaho border. The largest community is Logan, where we are located, and which is home to Utah State University. The population of Logan is approximately 40,000 people, and Cache Valley as a whole is home to approximately 100,000 people. We moved to our current church location in 1909, and completed an extensive renovation and expansion in 2004. We have historically been a small, but active, presence in our community. Perhaps our most notable former parishioner is Paul Jones, who served as vicar at St. John's (1906-1913) before becoming the Bishop of Utah. He is now commemorated on the Episcopal Church calendar on September 4, and our parish library, which he founded, is named after him. Our sanctuary seats approximately 200 people, and is known locally for its good acoustics and stained glass windows. We also have a social hall and kitchen, nursery, office area, and upstairs we have a choir room and loft, and five classrooms. Our building is ADA accessible, with ramps at the entrance doors, and an elevator. We also own an older, historic house next door, which was renovated in 2013, and now provides office space for community non-profits.

Volunteer opportunities

One time opportunities
Ongoing commitment opportunities

Almost everything at St. John's is run by church volunteers, and we are always looking for additional 'helping hands'. Please contact the church office to let us know of your interest and we will provide more information about available opportunities.

Ministries

1st Tuesday Food Pantry Ministry

Food Pantries

On the first Tuesday of the month (traditionally the peak food distribution day) St. John's hosts a hospitality ministry at the Cache Community Food Pantry, providing food and drinks (donated by parishioners and local businesses) to the clients while they wait in line. We also help to organize the clothing distribution that takes place at the same time. Additionally, volunteers help to direct traffic in the parking lot, load groceries into cars, and retrieve shopping carts.

Alms Sunday

Donation Coordination/Distribution

On the third Sunday of the month the offertory is donated to a local charitable organization, which provides assistance to people in the community. The organization receiving the offertory changes every three months, and on each Alms Sunday we invite someone from the organization to speak at both services about their program.

Nursing Home Ministry

Aging, Health and Wellbeing

St. John's is part of a seven church ecumenical rotation that provides Sunday services at three local nursing home facilities.

Concerts and Recitals

Arts & Culture

St. John's hosts USU student music recitals. In exchange for use of our space, recital students perform a piece during our Sunday worship services.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Arts & Culture

Each Tuesday a group of knitters (some members, some not) meet at St. John's to create prayer shawls, which are distributed to people who are experiencing challenges in their lives (illness, divorce, etc.). The aim is to provide people with a physical reminder of God's love for them, as well as a source of comfort.
