Historic St. Andrew's Episcopal Church

Share a story

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is 125 years old and has been located in the heart of the Central neighborhood since 1891.  During the late 1800s, when Cleveland emerged as an industrial power, many Blacks migrated to this area for a better life. The spiritual and social needs of these citizens were met through their church. The Episcopal Diocese of Ohio wanted to establish a “Colored Mission” to bring more Blacks to God and the Christian way of life. There was a major effort to recruit African-Americans who had traditionally affiliated with the Baptist or Methodist church.

St. Andrew’s had a humble beginning as a “Colored Mission” sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio with its first services being held in the abandoned old St. Peter’s Church on Chapel Street between Scovill and Woodland Avenues.
