Church of the Messiah, Woods Hole

Our History
In 1852, the founders of the Church of the Messiah held their first meeting in a local school house. That October, a summer resident of Woods Hole, Joseph Story Fay, donated three acres of land for a church building. Two years later, on February 14, 1854, the first church was consecrated.
In 1887, the Vestry accepted another gift from Mr. Fay to build a stone church. The new church was built on the site of the original church, which was moved to its current location…50 yards to the north! The Stone Church construction began in 1888, and the church was consecrated by Bishop Paddock in 1889. To this day, we carry on the vision and faith of our founders, welcoming all, no matter where they are in their spiritual journey.

Our Mission Statement:

The Church of the Messiah is an inclusive and welcoming community

– Committed to serving God by serving neighbors near and far;

– Affirming the dignity of every human being;

– Believing we are called to be stewards of creation.

The 10 am service includes organ music, hymns and our church choir.
We always welcome visitors and newcomers and strive to make every effort to help everyone feel comfortable and at ease during our services. A lively, friendly and well-attended Coffee Hour is held in our Parish and Community Center, adjacent to the church, following the 10 am service. Our average combined attendance for both services is between 70-90 people, including those on Zoom.
In parishioners' own words, the Church of the Messiah maintains "openness to others, acceptance of diversity, embracing of children and friendliness" and is a community of "lots of wonderful people, with many interesting personalities." Most importantly perhaps, at the Church of the Messiah "you can be who you are," whether one of the children or one of the older parishioners who are appreciated, in the words of one person, for "sharing their wisdom and strength with us."
