St. George's Episcopal Church

Share a story

St. Georges Church, located across the street from North Salinas High School, consists of a sanctuary that can seat approximately 100, adjoining offices, a small meeing room, a parish hall that can accommodate 125 persons at any one time, and a separate School School building with one classroom. The entire campus that includes an acre of open land, is about 1 and one-half acres in size.

Except for the summer months when we have one Sunday service, two services are held each Sunday at 8 and 10 am.  Normally, the early service is  the Rite I Eucharist and the later service the Rite II Eucharist.  At present we have a Rector (at 80%-time due to budget constraints) and a Deacon.

Volunteer opportunities

One time opportunities
Ongoing commitment opportunities

Volunteers are needed to staff the church office during the week since we do not have a church secretary. There is also an urgent need for experiences teachers for our Sunday School, helping to maintain the parish gardens, and for working with the food pantry team.

Ministries

Touchstone Ministry for Seniors

Aging, Health and Wellbeing
Meal Programs

The Touchstone Ministry is envisioned to provide professional daycare and activities for seniors using the parish hall facility.  We cannot achieve this goal until funds are raised that will allow us to apply for a matching grant from the diocese. At present, the Touchstone planning team offers a Senior Luncheon once a month for a nominal cost.

Dragon Slayers Youth Group

Children and Youth Ministries

The Dragon Slayers Youth Group is essentially a parish-sponsored club of middle and high school youth in the area who may or may not be affiliated with the parish.  The Group is provided a club room and other facilities of the parish for its activities. The club is financially self-supporting and self-governing and frequently assists the parish by helping with special events.

The Community Garden of Salinas

Creation Care/Community Gardens

The Community Garden is a parish-sponsored service offered to residents in the surrounding community. It is located on open land owned by and adjacent to the church campus.  Eighteen 4 by 8 foot raised beds are available for planting and water is provided from the church water system.  Gardeners are asked to pay $15 per year for water.

St. George's Food Pantry

Food Pantries

The Food Pantry is open to anyone in the local community in need of food every Friday. Food stocks, both dry and frozen, are obtained by donations by parish members and from the Salinas Food Bank at a nominal cost.  This is a very successful ministry to the community and it would be open more often if we had enough volunteers to staff it.
