St. Margaret's Episcopal Church

Share a story

St. Margaret's Episcopal Church was founded in 1990 as a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas with the purpose of establishing a church for the growing western edge of the city of Little Rock. After months of planning, recruiting missionary members and making thousands of invitational phone calls, St. Margaret's had its first worship service on Novemer 3, 1991. For its first few years, the commmunity worshipped in movie theaters, until the current building was completed and dedicated in April of 1996.

As the St. Margaret's community has grown, several creative initiatives have taken life here. The Institute for Theological Studies at St. Margaret's (ITSSM) was created for to promote "faith with understanding" for a wider community. Members of the ITSSM Guild assist in fulfilling this mission through various activities and events, including book studies, classes and symposiums. One of the projects of the ITSSM was to create SUMMA, a theological debate society for high school students. This project was so successful it has now become an offering of the University of the South. The ITSSM also established The Interfaith Center, which works to reduce the fear and hatred among the world's religions in Little Rock. In 2007, St. Margaret's helped to build the Arkansas House of Prayer on our campus. It is an interfaith haven set apart in nature dedicated to comtemplative prayer, medication and quiet. On aveage, 250 individualsvisit the House of Prayer each month for silent prayer, and many hundreds of diverse people have particiapted in the interfaith worship and prayer workshops offered here.

Although the majority of St. Margaret's members reside in Little Rock, our congregation includes persons living in surrounding communities; our congregation is comprised of all ages and our doors are open to all people, regardless of ethnicity, race, sexuality or disability. In addiiton to offering regular Sunday worship services and hosting church-related activities thorughout the week, St. Margaret's seeks to be a vital part of the community at large through sponsorship of such programs and events as Food Truck Mondays, a pre-school day care program, and annual Independence Day celebrations. St. Margaret's also carries out a number of ministries within the community.

Sacred Ground Race Dialogue Circles

Racial Reconciliation

Sacred Ground is dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race, racism, and whiteness while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity. The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.

Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.
