Anglo-Catholic Tradition

We worship here at Holy Cross in the Anglo-Catholic Tradition. Another way to say this is that we worship in the Catholic Tradition of Anglicanism. By Anglican we mean our historic connection to the Church of England.

Many people today think that “Catholic” means “Roman Catholic.” The true meaning of “Catholic” is “Universal.” When we say we worship in the catholic tradition of Anglicanism, we mean that our roots go back to the ancient and primitive church of the Apostles which was founded by Jesus Christ.

Central to our roots is the Sacramental Worship of God. We understand that in the Gospel, Christ himself ordained two sacraments, namely Baptism and The Holy Eucharist, also called Communion. Baptism is the door or entrance to the Church by which become sharers in the death of Christ and heirs of the promise of new life in him. The Eucharist is our spiritual food and drink by which we are nourished by the manna of God himself in the Body and Blood of Christ.

We hold worship as one of the most important things we do as Christians. And because we also believe that the way we worship shapes the way we believe, the way that we worship is also important to us. Scripturally Grounded

Here at Holy Cross, our faith deeply rooted and grounded in the Holy Scriptures. As Christians in the Anglican tradition, we believe that “Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation.” (Article V of the 39 Articles. Book of Common Prayer, page xxx)

We hold the Scriptures to be central to our life in Christ. At every service we read from the Scriptures and hear sermons opening up their meaning to us.

Serving God in our Community

As Christians we serve God by serving those around us.  Our Lord came among us to seek and to serve, and on the night before his Passion, he washed his disciples feet, and told us that we are to do for others as he has done for us.

We reach out in service to the world around us in response to our Lord’s admonition in Matthew’ Gospel: “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:37-40)
